Interior design:can you say 'cheese'?
Yes, indeed. Aptly named after Swiss cheese with many holes in it, the Emmental hanging staircase surprises with its innovation and creativity. Designed by Biljana Jovanovic, an architect from Budapest, this refreshingly interesting take on hanging stairs incorporates features natural to floor-mounted staircases, such as angled treads that are common for steep slope stairs.
What's it made from, I wonder? On some of the pictures, you can see clearly the great thickness of the walls and shiness of the treads. Which makes us think Corian is the material of choice here. It almost looks like the encasement was molded as one solid piece and then mounted by its top. We like projects that make us think and challenge the common sense. And the common sense tells us that it's most likely very slippery and uncomfortable to climb ... unless you're a kid ;-)
I also always wonder why home owners or architects choose to make stairs hanging, like circular cutouts and angled treads wasn't enough to attract attention ;-)? Is that because it's easier to install? Maybe, since you only need to mount it on one end. But then the construction must be much more sturdy.
This captivating staircase deserves some criticism and admiration at the same time. The weak point appears to be its safety while the design is a definite show stopper. It's a great addition to our collection of unordinary home design ideas.
